help with addiction

My name is Wesley and I am a 20 year old recovering addict. My drugs of choice were marijuana and alcohol. I have been clean and sober for close to one year now and my goal is to give you some advice that I know worked for me. I know that most people reading this will be older than me and also have a lot more experience with addiction with me but I am just trying to help someone. it has been a long road but there are some keys things that i have done that i feel have helped me be as successful as I am.
1. The main thing that has help me to fight my addiction is the strong relationship that I have built with god. I am not trying to tell everyone to turn to Christianity, but I really believe that if you find a power greater than yourself then it will give you all the motivation and support that you need. When I hit my rock bottom i felt like I was all alone and through prayer and faith I have came along ways from what I once was.
2. Another thing that I would say to do is to stop associating with the people that you feel bring you down. I know that it sounds like I am telling you to ditch all of your friends and you could easily put that perspective in your head. But I do not mean cut your friends out of your life forever, it will just make things a whole lot easier during your recovery because you will not be around the substances that bring you down. Now that I have gotten stronger I can be around my friends again but during the first part of my recovery I tried to stay away from them because it would have been a whole lot harder to say no when you are around what you are trying to stay away from.
3. This was the most embarrassing part of my recovery, but going to rehab is something that I will never forget. It really helped me to be around people that wanted to become clean and sober just like me, and also to be around people that were educated in helping people that had addiction problems. It is not as embarrassing to sign up for rehab as it to wind up in jail.
4. I hate reading more than probably anyone else in the world but when I decided to get myself clean I started reading. And there are a whole bunch of books that will help educate you in many different types of addiction. Whether it be the Alcoholics Anonymous book or some other book in that category I strongly recommend that you try and get something to read.
